PERSONALITY:
Tseng presents as a capable and professional businessman, however, he also has a track record of failures, both personally and professionally which still weigh in on his decisions. Professionally, Tseng has a history of allowing his emotions and personal agenda to interfere with his assignments. Under the guidance of Veld, Tseng was taught to consider his professional obligations over personal desires. This conflict of interest comes up quite a few times in his professional career as a Turk. One of the first conflicts of interest comes up when Tseng decides to put an employee's life over the employer's reputation. Even after being reprimanded by Veld, Tseng once again chooses to preserve the life of identified traitors of the Shinra company—Veld and his daughter being the offenders. Tseng takes accountability for the deaths of the targets, despite this being a lie. Tseng further benefits from this fabrication by becoming the leader of the Turks, with Rufus Shinra's blessing as the president's son backed Tseng in his conviction of taking care of the threat. This covenant between Tseng and Rufus cultures a strong foundation for the future of the Shinra Electric Company.

Tseng benefited both professionally and personally from duplicity to the current president of Shinra and Rufus, the son of the president. Tseng became one of Rufus' greatest fiduciary and personally he was able to attend to his own morals and values which Veld believed in as well: to conduct necessary business but not to lose your heart to the mission.

We see further evidence of Tseng's subterfuge as he, once again, intervenes Shinra's best interest by trying to capture Zack Fair and Cloud Strife who have escaped from being experimented on by one of Shinra's high ranking researchers. Tseng has a history with Zack Fair and failure to rescue him left Tseng with a great deal of guilt.

While Tseng can be cool, collected, and meticulous he also has a soft sense of humor. Years prior to the above mention of Zack and Cloud's escape was a time when Zack and Tseng had encountered one another numerous times through their shared affiliation with Shinra. Tseng often acted as a director for Zack's missions and the two of them became friends over time.

Tseng: Ready to go?

Zack: A routine job, right? No sweat!

Tseng: I wonder... Originally, Sephiroth was assigned to this mission. That means it's a top-priority matter. Be alert, or you'll fail.

Zack: And Sephiroth?

Tseng: Refusing to go, apparently.

Zack: Oh, what is that? They spoil him too much!

Tseng: Why don't you say that to his face?

Zack: Uh, no thanks!

The above caption was taken from the Crisis Core game. During the period of the Crisis Core game Tseng appeared to be lighter in character, often engaged in light banter such as the conversation above and the following one:

Zack: Ugh, so Turks always do this stuff?

Tseng: Someone has to do it.

Zack: Must be rough...

Tseng: Don't worry. We're paid much better than you are.

Zack: No way!

One additional attribute, which is my absolute favorite thing ever in the Crisis Core game, is that Zack finds a camera outside of Aerith's church and it's clearly labeled "TSENG," however Zack doesn't know it's actually Tseng's camera due to being unable to read "TSENG" or pronounce it (which is a lost joke through the translation of the game). However, this hidden gem relates to Tseng's long-standing relationship with Aerith Gainsborough. Tseng has known Aerith since she was a child and has since watched over her through the years. Despite Shinra's interest in Aerith as being the last Cetra Tseng has his own personal interest in her as well through his long years of knowing her and holds feelings for her. Through Crisis Core the main protagonist, Zack, meets Aerith and the two develop a relationship - to which Zack eventually asks Tseng to look after Aerith (video) while he's away on a mission. Unknownst to Zack, Tseng's looked after Aerith since years prior. Perhaps this is why Tseng laughs after Zack's request.

Tseng's demeanor within the original FFVII game appeared as the more commonly displayed side of Tseng which is the serious, meticulous, and sometimes even condescending side. Whereas Crisis Core, set before the original FFVII game's timeline, displayed Tseng as a lighter individual in this game he exhibited a darker and even a crueler strand to his character. Despite this, Tseng still has moments within the game where he demonstrates the ability to empathize with, even with the intention to manipulate, other characters. A few examples come to mind. The first is with Aerith when she is a child and he tries his best to connect with her, "but Aerith, surely you hear voices sometimes when you're all alone?" The next example is when he's reasoning with Elena, "hey Elena, how 'bout dinner after this job's over?" Which prompts Elena to leave the area and get to safety. Tseng ensured Elena that he'll meet her later so she wouldn't worry while he remained behind in danger.

Tseng is capable of violence, not only through his training as a Turk but also through emotional outbursts. One of these outbursts comes when he strikes Aerith in the original FFVII game. I believe Tseng slapped Aerith out of an emotional response to Aerith pursuing dangerous activities with the protagonists from the game. Tseng watched Aerith for all those years, developed feelings for her, and carried guilt for Zack's death and was overwhelmed with Aerith's recent engagement with dangerous activities with the protagonists of the game.

POWERS/ABILITIES:
Tseng is resourceful, though much of this skill has to do with the connections he built and had access to on Gaia. However, these experiences can help him network in Prisma. Tseng is an adequate fighter but he is not overly strong, powerful, and more than not relies on other members of his organization to do some of the missions which could involve battles.

One Day All This Can Be Yours - Oceansize
And maybe you'll realize
When you take those little tests
The more you breathe, the more you lead
You're more yourself even less
Nobody ever said they'd love you forever
They close you up and let you down
Separate forever
One day all this could be yours
